Pumped-storage hydroelectricity (PSH), or pumped hydroelectric energy storage (PHES), is a type of hydroelectric energy storage used by electric power systems for load balancing. A PSH system stores energy in the form of gravitational potential energy of water, pumped from a lower elevation reservoir to a higher elevation.
Pumped storage hydropower projects require a constant body of water with water available, and geographical and geophysical conditions for the construction of a reservoir, a waterway and a (pump and turbine) powerhouse.

Pumped storage is by far the largest-capacity form of grid energy storage available, and, as of 2020, accounts for around 95% of all active storage installations worldwide, with a total installed throughput capacity of over 181 GW and a total installed storage capacity of over 1.6 TWh.
The implementation of the pump storage project depends on topography, geology and only partly on hydrology. In pumping mode, a surplus of electrical energy is used to pump water up from lower to upper reservoir whereas, in production mode, electrical power produced using stored potential energy .
The upper reservoir, Llyn Stwlan, and dam of the Ffestiniog Pumped Storage Scheme in North Wales. The lower power station has four water turbines which generate 360 MW of electricity within 60 seconds of the need arising. Along with energy management, pumped storage systems help stabilize electrical network frequency and provide reserve generation.
How Pumped Storage Hydro Works. Pumped storage hydro (PSH) involves two reservoirs at different elevations. During periods of low energy demand on the electricity network, surplus electricity is used to pump water to the higher reservoir. When electricity demand increases, the stored water is released, generating electricity.
energy storage in an energy storage lake. The most recent Delta21 design has an energy lake with a pump turbine capacity of 1.8 GW, which, if necessary, can quickly drain river water at very high water levels, thereby preventing the need for reinforcement of river dikes. Furthermore, the pump turbine is
term energy storage at a relatively low cost and co-benefits in the form of freshwater storage capacity. A study shows that, for PHS plants, water storage costs vary from 0.007 to 0.2 USD per cubic metre, long-term energy storage costs vary from 1.8 to 50 USD per megawatt-hour (MWh) and short-term energy storage costs

Despite being the largest form of renewable energy storage with nearly 200GW of installed capacity in over 400 operational projects, pumped storage still faces barriers to development. To help address this, a new industry collaborated guide provides recommendations for delivering the energy storage solution the world needs.
Pumped hydroelectric energy storage stores energy in the form of potential energy of water that is pumped from a lower reservoir to a higher level reservoir. In this type of system, low cost electric power (electricity in off-peak time) is used to run the pumps to raise the water from the lower reservoir to the upper one.
